Inman Wins Spelling Bee Championship at Washington School
One of the highlights of the year played out on the Washington Primary School stage last week as second graders vied in the 2008 spelling bee contest. In the end, Nicholas Inman was crowned champion after he correctly spelled the word “eclipse.”
“I was amazed at they could spell some of the words,” said teacher Tim Pillion, who founded the event last year. “I thought the kids did great. Everyone had fun. The contest really gets them thinking.”
Students qualified for the finals through earlier rounds conducted in their respective classrooms. With their classmates watching, the 20 finalists sat in chairs on the school stage as Mr. Pillion called out this year’s words.
Mr. Inman proved to be a formidable competitor. Ryan Gaines and Christopher Piazza finished second and third, respectively. The event served to highlight reading, grammar and spelling and heightened the interest of students in each of these areas.
Last year current third grader Sarah James won the spelling bee title when she correctly spelled the word “giraffe.” “It’s a nice end-of-the-year event that everyone looks forward to,” Mr. Pillion said.
Ms. James and Mr. Inman will have their names engraved on a plaque that will be affixed in the second grade hallway at the school.
