Kevin Marek Honored with Fred Cambria Award

Huntington senior Kevin Marek was presented with the Fred Cambria Award, the scholarship that accompanies it and a handsome plaque, too, at the 40th Senior Athletic Awards Banquet last week.

“Whenever you went to a Huntington athletic event you would find Fred Cambria there on the sidelines,” Blue Devil lacrosse coach Paul McDermott said. “He especially enjoyed football and lacrosse. His son Fred played on the Syracuse lacrosse team that won the 1983 national championship. Even when his children were not involved in a sport, you would see him giving his support.”

The annual award doesn’t necessarily go to a player who receives all-division or all-county recognition, but to someone who shows great sportsmanship and enjoyment toward the game of lacrosse. Representatives of the Cambria family were on hand to make the formal presentation.

Marek is a perfect fit for the award, according to McDermott. “He is a gentleman who played 100 percent every day and was willing to assist the team in any way possible,” McDermott said. “He gets along well with both coaches and teammates, who also respect him and his qualities as a player.”

Mr. Cambria, who passed away suddenly several years ago, continued to support the Huntington lacrosse program even after his children graduated. “He was a pleasant man whose positive attitude touched many,” McDermott said.
