Huntington Lax Alum Wins National Championship
Austin Carino has led a charmed life as a lacrosse player. He won county and state crowns as a Blue Devil star and this past spring he helped lead New York Institute of Technology to the NCAA Division II crown, scoring three goals in the finals before a record crowd of 24,317 in Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Masschusetts.
The 20-year old Carino, who plays attack, has enjoyed a stellar collegiate career, scoring 66 goals over the past two seasons including 36 this year. The 5’8, 175 lb. star has started all 25 games in which he’s appeared.
NYIT finished the 2008 season with a 13-1 mark. In the national championship game, Carino started the team’s comeback after LeMoyne College jumped out to a 5-2 lead. The Huntington alum scored early in the second quarter to swing the momentum and propel the Bears to the fourth NCAA title in the program’s history.
Earlier in the spring, Carino was named East Coast Conference Player of the Week after a three-goal performance against C.W. Post, who at the time was ranked third in the nation. Carino’s heroics that day helped carry NYIT to a 10-8 victory.
At Huntington, Carino was equally brilliant, winning All-County honors twice. He also lettered three times as a varsity soccer player. As a high school junior, Carino scored 84 goals, helping the Blue Devils to their first ever state lacrosse championship. As a senior he scored 71 times and assisted on 11 other goals, as Huntington won the state crown again.
