Catching up with Jesse Langel

When Jesse Langel graduated from Huntington High School in June 1995 he quickly disappeared from the local scene. But, he has been quite busy, earning undergraduate and law degrees and working for a New York City law firm. Yes, this is another local success story.

After earning his Huntington diploma, Langel headed west. He attended Arizona State University where he obtained a business degree. He followed that by graduating from New York Law School in Manhattan. The former Blue Devil wrestler is currently employed as an associate at John Chambers, P.C. It’s a small medical malpractice boutique firm.

Langel’s malpractice specialty has him representing plaintiffs against doctors and hospitals. “About 70 percent of my firm’s caseload is birth-related malpractice,” he said. “The remaining 30 percent of the cases comprise surgery and misdiagnosis.”

He loves being a lawyer, but Langel is busy making plans to begin his quest for a MBA degree next September. Right now, he’s waiting on application decisions. “My preferred MBA schools are Wharton, NYU Stern, Columbia, and Carnegie Mellon,” he said. He hopes eventually to shift from injury-related litigation to business litigation.

During his years on the Blue Devil wrestling team, Langel played an important role in one of the state’s elite programs, helping the squad win both invitational and league titles. His junior year saw Huntington finish third in the Section XI tournament and sixth in the state rankings. “We counted on Jesse in our varsity lineup and he was one of the hardest workers in the room,” legendary coach Lou Giani said.

Remembered around Huntington as quiet and serious, but with a good sense of humor, Langel was well-regarded both by his teammates and the coaching staff. “Jesse was very reliable and that’s what we needed,” Giani said. He’s still got the competitive itch today.

“After college, I competed in two natural bodybuilding competitions,” Langel said. “I placed second in both shows, which were highly competitive. I was always very focused and competitive in bodybuilding - and also in wrestling, but in wrestling I was unable to channel and control the nervousness and anxiety before matches. Consequently, my performance always suffered. But that's okay because we live and learn.”
Today, Langel calls Manhattan home. He is single without any children. “I think I have more ground to cover before being tied down,” he said. “Most of my friends, on the other hand, are either married, engaged, and/or with kids.”

Well-spoken and unusually focused as a high school student, few people are surprised with Langel’s success. A member of an unusually talented graduating class, he’s made Huntington proud.
