Tri-M Music Honor Society Inducts 15 New Members into Ranks
With Huntington High School’s music program so highly regarded across the state and nation, inclusion in the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter carries special status and meaning. Recently, the group’s ranks nearly doubled when 15 more students were welcomed into the elite circle.
This year’s induction ceremony was held in the School Heritage Museum and included a program filled with dignity and class, ranging from various musical performances to stirring remarks by students, guests and faculty. It was a night for the school’s music stars to shine.
Early in the evening’s program, Tri-M officers Katherine Beavers (president), Jeffrey Bishop (vice-president), Shannon Connors (secretary), Virginia Johnson (treasurer) and Olivia Wyrick (historian) spoke passionately about the meaning of the society and the role it fills in the school and community.
The new inductees include Johanna Clifford, Larissa DeMasi, Caitlin Etri, Lena Freed, Taylor Fritts, Kaila Harlan, Keith Kirkpatrick, Evan McCann, Kieran McCarthy Fell, Erin McGoldrick, Thomas Monks, Rebecca Silverman, Olivia Sklyarova, Max Smoller and Colleen Teubner.
"The students who were honored at the Tri-M induction are not simply talented musicians,” said Joan R. Fretz, district director of fine and performing arts. “They have a strong sense of community and dedicated service to our department. They understand the importance of contributing to a group effort and we couldn't run the department without them. I'm very proud of them all.”
In addition to the society’s officers, continuing Tri-M members include Josh Blumberg, Stephanie Chang, Julien Feldman, Zachary Grill, Amanda Ho, Diya Kapur, Matthew Meszaros, Nicole Palmer, Amanda Plunkett, John Urban, Christian Wilbur and Jake Zimmerman.
The audience was treated to several impressive musical presentations by students. Amando Ho (violin I), Joseph D’Esposito (violin II), Katherine Beavers (viola) and Virginia Johnson (cello) performed Arthur S. Sullivan’s “Romance for String Quartet.” Later, Olivia Wyrick (violin), Christian Wilbur (viola) and Matthew Meszaros (cello) performed “The Earle of Oxford’s March” by William Byrd.
Tri-M advisor Lisa Leonardi thanked the society’s continuing members for their years of service and their exemplary talent, pointing out that the group is essential to the music department’s operation.
The Huntington School District has built a music program that is the envy of many. “Our community has long valued music education and the performing arts and that tradition continues today,” Superintendent John J. Finello said.
