Flower Hill First Grade Social a Special Night
The Flower Hill School PTA hit a homerun with this year’s first grade social. The event featured a “High School Musical” theme and drew a large crowd of students and parents.
The school gym and cafeteria were transformed with decorations and took on the appearance of Disney’s “East High” for a night the first graders and their families won’t soon forget. “Go Wildcats” banners and collages of High School Musical stars, along with dozens of red and white balloons, which were donated by Value Drugs, provided a stunning backdrop to the activities.
The youngsters came dressed in red and white Wildcat colors and danced to tunes spun by a DJ from Jam Mix Productions. The songs, which included a selection from “High School Musical,” including “Bet on It,” “What Time is It” and “Fabulous, Work this Out,” were heard far into the night. Children also enjoyed dancing to a disc of songs provided by physical education teacher Nancy Conlon that was used during a recent holiday hop.
Huntington Sports League cheerleaders greeted the first graders when they arrived for the social. Organizers said it was one of the highlights of the evening. The cheerleaders, who were coordinated by parent Laura Duffy, included Allison and Lauren Batz, Megan Fiedler, Sarah Snowball, Christine Fitzpatrick, Mackenzie Bartlett, Erin and McKenna Duffy and Casey Rupert. The group continued keeping the youngsters in an “up” mood throughout the event.
PTA members Maureen Malone and Susan Minson, who organized the night, said they were especially proud of how the entire school district community came together to help bring a special touch to the event. “Calls were made to the high school, Finley and Huntington Intermediate to pull together a mix of older children to help captivate the young first graders’ attention,” Ms. Minson said. The response was impressive.
Members of Huntington High School’s National Honor Society chapter coordinated the snack tables at the event. The volunteers included Jenn Szilagy, Natasta Thalla and Fiona Byrne. J. Taylor Finley Middle School students Natalie Acton and Taylor Iwanicki also helped out with snacks and basketball games and Huntington Intermediate School students Scott Minson and Ben Warren pitched in, too.
“This is the type of activity that gives the district a ‘hometown feel’ and helps create a special school atmosphere,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. “The organizers and volunteers should be pleased with their efforts.”
