Huntington to Host Greg Buttle’s All-Long Island Football Camp

The Combine, former New York Jets star Greg Buttle’s All Long Island Football Camp, is coming to Huntington High School this July 28 to August 1. The camp is geared toward players entering grades seven through 12.

Huntington School District students will receive a special discount off the regular camp fee. Several full scholarships are being made available. The camp is also making a donation to the Blue Devil football program. Huntington players interested in attending the camp should either see one of their coaches or contact the camp directly.

Buttle came to the Jets from Penn State University where he captained the team and earned All-American honors at linebacker. He’s a member of Jets’ all-time team and was an All-Pro twice in his nine year NFL career.

Buttle, who currently works as an on-air television and radio football analyst, will direct the camp along with famed college coach Lou Schiavetta. The pair has put together what they believe will be an outstanding program for young football players.

The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and include field and classroom sessions. Campers can either use their own helmets, shoulder pads, jersey, pads and football shoes or rent gear. Mouthpieces are also required.

“Our program is very excited to have this opportunity and feel it will be extremely beneficial to our student-athletes” said Georgia D. McCarthy, Huntington director of athletics. The Huntington site includes a stunning synthetic turf field.

Schiavetta has two decades of experience at the three different colleges, most notably Stony Brook University, where he served as the offensive and recruiting coordinator. He is known as a master at teaching and motivating young athletes. “It’s going to be a great camp with a lot of individual attention for each player,” Schiavetta said about The Combine. “We are putting together an outstanding staff of professionals.”

Quarterbacks can expect to work on stance, three and five step drop backs, rollouts and passing drills. Receivers and running backs will focus on balanced stance, ball drills, patterns and blocking. Offensive linemen will learn the fundamentals of balance and technique in all facets of line play. Defensive linemen and linebackers will also concentrate on balanced stance, body positioning and proper pad level. Defensive backs will learn about play recognition, use of hands, stance and back pedal techniques and will engage in ball and strip drills.

Schiavetta said the camp seeks to heighten cognitive awareness and physical abilities, instruct and demonstrate proper fundamentals, create team concepts in a fun atmosphere, utilize film as a technique evaluation technique and teaching tool and emphasize developing skills from stance to finish. The player to coach ratio is expected to be 10:1.

Buttle is well-known throughout NFL circles and has been involved in all aspects of camp planning. “Greg’s record speaks for itself,” Schiavetta said. “He was exceptional on the field and has a lot to offer young players.”
