Blue Devils boys’ lacrosse coach Paul McDermott was selected to be a presenter at the recent U.S. Lacrosse national convention in Philadelphia. His workshop was on “Using Practice Time Effectively to Prepare for Our Next Opponent.” The convention drew hundreds of youth, scholastic and college coaches from across the country.

Peter Delfino’s 15 points helped the Huntington boys’ basketball team turn back Eastport-South Manor, 59-47 on a cold night on Suffolk’s East End. The Blue Devils jumped out to an early lead and were ahead at halftime, 34-26.

 

Huntington’s well-balanced scoring attack also included significant support from Anthony Brown (12 points) and 11 points apiece from Alex Brown and Ted Calligeros, respectively. Matt Duffy (7) and Ben Falter (3) combined for 10 more points. Calligeros, Duffy and Delfino all connected on three-point baskets. Anthony Brown chipped in with nine rebounds.

 

The Blue Devils were never seriously threatened in the game, which saw Huntington take a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter. The team is trying to battled its way into post-season contention during the final two weeks of the regular season.

 

Huntington School Board members approved numerous appointments to the Blue Devil coaching staff including Krystle Canino (head varsity softball), Michael Catania (JV baseball), Debra Cheskes (head girls’ spring track), Nancy Conlon (Finley softball), William Eriksen (Finley boys’ lacrosse), Jamie Fishlow (varsity boys’ tennis), James Hoops (JV boys’ tennis), Gregory Kalkau (head varsity baseball), Charles Lukralle (assistant varsity boys’ lacrosse), Timothy Madden (Finley boys’ tennis), Jamie Mastrangelo (assistant varsity softball), Paul McDermott (head varsity boys’ lacrosse), Jerome Merkerson (Finley boys’ lacrosse) and Lynn Perzeszty (assistant varsity crew).

 

Also receiving appointments were Christopher Petrucci (Finley baseball), Robert Polizzo (varsity crew), Bradley Reminick (assistant varsity girls’ lacrosse), Jennifer Rodgers (Finley girls’ lacrosse), Joseph Roy (assistant Finley boys’ lacrosse), Jonathan Schwartz (assistant varsity baseball), Jillian Talleur (assistant Finley girls’ lacrosse), Vincent Tannazzo (assistant Finley boys’ lacrosse), Travis Tate (assistant varsity boys’ spring track), Eric Triolo (assistant varsity boys’ lacrosse), Anthony Troffa (JV boys’ lacrosse), David Wilson (assistant JV boys’ lacrosse), Ronald Wilson (head varsity boys’ track) and Kathleen Wright (JV girls’ lacrosse).


The Huntington wrestling team won the Big Ten tournament at Albany High School last weekend. Huntington outscored Burnt Hills, 230 - 204.5 for the crown as teams from Amsterdam (187.5), Valley Stream Central (162), Guilderland (143.5), Newburgh (137), New Rochelle (118.5), Warrensburg (88.5), Albany (69.5), Schenectady (64.5), Revena-Coeymans-Selkirk (57), Averill Park (56), Cobleskill (55.5), Bethlehem (54), Christian Brothers Academy (32) and Albany Academy (0) trailed fair in the distance.

 

Huntington’s Jose Vasquez (103 lbs.) won the trophy for most pins in the least amount of time with four falls in 6:13 and also earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award given to the tournament’s best wrestler between 96-145 lbs. Vasquez was joined by teammates Damon McQueen (96 lbs.) and Francisco Pereira (119 lbs.) in winning weight class championships. Nigel McNeil finished second after dropping a 3-2 decision in the 112 lb. final.
