Science Regents Scores Dissected in Huntington

Huntington School District officials are studying scores earned by students taking Earth Science, Living Environment, Chemistry and Physics Regents exams this spring.

Of the 200 students who took the Earth Science Regents, 86 percent passed with a 65 or higher and 92 percent reached the state variance grade of 55.  Of the test-takers, 88 students notched at least an 85 on the exam.  The results included scores for 51 students at J. Taylor Finley Middle School that took the test.  Every single one of them passed and all but one had an 85 or better.

“The Finley students that sat for the Earth Science Regents turned in remarkable results,” Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello said.  “That 50-of-51 students reached the mastery level is outstanding.”

Of the 325 students who took the Living Environment Regents, 90 percent passed with a 65 or higher, including 157 that scored at least an 85.  In all, 94 percent of the test-takers reached or surpassed the state variance grade of 55.

The Chemistry Regents saw 81 percent of the 162 test-takers pass with a grade of at least 65 while 98 percent reached the state variance level.  A total of 26 students earned an 85 or higher on the exam.

Of the 145 students taking the Physics exam, 57 percent passed with a grade of 65 or higher while 74 percent reached the state variance level.  A total of 17 students notched an 85 or better on the difficult exam.

“We are taking a look at all of the Regents results to determine what needs to be done to improve student performance levels,” Mr. Finello said.  “David Casamento, our new director of science, will be studying scores on each of the science Regents exams, too.  We hope to see more of our students on the mastery level next year and all of the test-takers passing.”
