Finley Students Shine on Integrated Algebra Regents
All 66 of the J. Taylor Finley Middle School students who sat for the June Integrated Algebra Regents exam passed, with 62 of them scoring a grade of 85 or better. The results were welcome news for school officials.
“What a wonderful academic achievement and a real tribute to our students and their teachers,” Assistant Superintendent Barbara Lacey said. Finley, which opened in 1965, has long boasted an exceptional math program and students have scored exceedingly well on state exams.
“Finely students really shined on this exam,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. “It’s wonderful to see so many students excelling. These students and their teachers should be very proud of these results.”
Wayne Edwards, the district director of math, was also quite pleased with the Regents scores. “I would like to acknowledge John Amato and Ken Parham for their leadership,” he said in a nod to Finley’s principal and assistant principal, respectively. “I also appreciate the dedication, hard work and the total team effort put forth by the Finley math department, particularly the eighth grade teachers, Melanie Demarco, Elizabeth Grobe, and Denise Grodzicki.”
At Huntington High School, 219 students also took the Integrated Algebra Regents in June. Of them, 81 percent passed, including 15 students that scored at least an 85 and 163 that earned a grade between 65 and 84. In all, 89 percent of high school test-takers met the state variance score of 55.
