Sangiovanni Second in Nation in Lax Scoring
Frank Sangiovanni wrapped up his college lacrosse career by scoring 62 goals for SUNY College at Plattsburgh. The breathtaking barrage placed him second in the nation. The Huntington alum leaves the upstate program as its all-time leader in goals with 135.
Sangiovanni, who graduated from Huntington in 2004, will return to Plattsburgh this fall to finish requirements for an undergraduate degree in communications, but his lacrosse career is now complete and he’s happy with the results. “It was the best time of my life,” he said about college and playing on the NCAA Division III team there. “I really enjoyed it.”
This spring he became the first Plattsburgh player ever picked for the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s All-Star squad. "I am very proud of Frank for this honor,” Plattsburgh coach P.J. Kavanagh said. "He has led the SUNYAC for the past two years in goals, so he is deserving of the recognition. He has rewritten the school scoring records.”
Sangiovanni, who wore No. 32 for the Cardinals, was also named Second Team All-SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletic Conference) after the leading the conference in goals scored for the second consecutive year. His 62 goals this past spring were second best in the country as was his goals-per-game average of 3.88.
As a freshman, Sangiovanni played in all 12 Plattsburgh games, scoring seven goals and tallying six assists. He scored at least one point in nine games. The next year he gained more steam, firing in 18 goals and adding half-a-dozen assists.
As a junior the 5’9, 165 lb. former Blue Devil exploded for 48 goals and nine assists, including four game winning scores. He played in all 15 games, starting 14 of them, and getting off 96 shots while also scooping up 24 ground balls.
This year Sangiovanni started all 16 games, launching 144 shots, scoring ten man-up goals, two game-winners and picking up 28 ground balls. His career total of 166 points is a Plattsburgh best. Yet, despite his scoring heroics, Plattsburgh struggled and missed the playoffs, finishing with an 8-8 record after winning nine games in 2007. “I wish we had won more,” Sangiovanni said.
As a Huntington senior, Sangiovanni scored 30 goals and added 17 assists, earning All-County lacrosse honors. The performance helped the Blue Devils finish 12-4, after an upset loss in the Suffolk playoffs.
In addition to starring with the Blue Devils on the lacrosse field, Sangiovanni was one of the wrestling team’s most important members throughout his high school varsity career. He proved his worth in dual meets and tournaments, earning a reputation as one of the hardest workers in the practice room. “Frank meant a lot to this program and is always welcome around here,” said Travis Smith, an assistant wrestling coach. “He helped us win many championships over the years.”
