Finley French Students are among Long Island’s Best
A trio of eighth grade J. Taylor Finley Middle School students earned honors in the 2007 American Association of Teachers of French annual poetry competition.
The Finley contingent squared off against other Long Island middle school students at Ward Melville High School in Setauket. When it was over, the local group had claimed second, third and honorable mention places.
Nicholas Maiarelli earned Le Deuxieme Prix (second prize) for his recitation of "Le Cancre" par Jacques Prevert. Nitika Shah was awarded Le Troisieme Prix (third prize) after reciting "Chanson d'automne" par Paul Verlaine. Sarah Whelton rounded out the honorees with an honorable mention award for her recitation of "Il pleut doucement sur la ville" par Paul Verlaine.
Finley French teacher Veturia Cranganu encouraged the students to participate and helped them select the poems from the long list of possibilities sent by the sponsors of the competition. “They practiced their selections in school with Mrs. Cranganu and at home for several weeks,” said Carmen Kasper, district director of foreign language.
“The excellent results show the students’ commitment to learning French and the teachers’ willingness to offer this extraordinary opportunity to her students,” Ms. Kasper added. “Congratulations to all for a job well done!”
