Jefferson PTA Reflections Program Participation Soars

Jefferson Primary School students participated in a national PTA artistic expression contest at record levels and a recent assembly program put on display just how much enthusiasm the initiative has created in the building.

“The National PTA believes that all children deserve a quality arts education and encourages students to pursue artistic expression through participation in its annual Reflections program,” according to the group’s website. “The initiative offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition.”

Students in every grade level are eligible to participate in six categories: literature, dance choreography, film/video production, musical composition, photography and the visual arts, including such forms as drawing, painting, printmaking and collage.

Millions of students of all ages across America have delved into an exploration of their artistic talents during the Reflection program’s nearly four decade history.  Jefferson School has always embraced the opportunity to participate in this initiative and interest in it remains high.

Each year the National PTA sets a competitive theme which student projects must address.  This year’s theme, “I Can Make a Difference by . . .” had the creative juices of Jefferson students flowing.

The program begins in each school building and successful projects advance through numerous intermediate levels before rising to state and national competitions, if the judges along the way so decree.

This year saw 132 Jefferson students participate in the program.  That number included participation from entire classes, which presented themed entries.  These classes included:

Jefferson’s PTA President and Co-chair of the Reflections program, Jennifer Hebert, along with parent Heide Varady presented participants certificates and ribbons at a special recognition assembly.   In addition, each participant also received a special gift bag of pencils and notepads.

Contest winners received certificates and gift bags.  Their work will now advance to the next level of competition and will face a new round of stringent judging.
