School Board Makes Probationary Special Ed Teaching Appointments
Four new probationary special education teachers were given appointments by Huntington School Board members at an August 20 meeting. The teachers include Christopher Pellegrino, Sarah Metcalf, Evelyn Goussis and Carol Emmerman.
The new faculty members were hired after the district utilized a structured screening and interview process that included teachers and administrators.
Christopher Pellegrino
Christopher Pellegrino will teach at the high school. He earned a B.A. degree in social science and an MA in liberal studies at Stony Brook University in 1996 and 2003, respectively. He is currently pursuing a graduate degree in special education at Dowling College.
Prior to coming to Huntington, Mr. Pellegrino was a child care worker at Hope House Ministries, a sixth grade Humanities teacher in New York City, a Global Studies teacher at Eastern Suffolk BOCES, a leave replacement in the Connetquot school district and a permanent substitute in Miller Place.
Mr. Pellegrino’s probationary period is slated to run from Sept. 1, 2007 to Sept. 1, 2010. District officials reviewed nine applications and interviewed each candidate prior to recommending Mr. Pellegrino for appointment.
Sarah Metcalf
Sarah Metcalf will teach at Jefferson Primary School. She obtained her undergraduate degree in child study at St. Joseph’s College in 2006 and is pursuing her Master’s degree at Long Island University.
Ms. Metcalf completed her student teaching requirements at Flower Hill and Woodhull schools. She has previously worked in the district as a leave replacement teacher at Southdown Primary School dating back to May 2006.
Ms. Metcalf’s probationary period is slated to run from Sept. 1, 2007 to Sept. 1, 2010. District officials reviewed seven applications and interviewed each candidate prior to recommending Ms. Metcalf for appointment.
Carol Emmerman
Carol Emmerman will teach at J. Taylor Finley Middle School. She earned her B.A. degree at SUNY College at Plattsburgh in elementary/special education in 2003 and obtained a Master’s degree in literacy at Long Island University in 2006.
Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Emmerman worked as a teaching assistant at both Wenonah Elementary School and Sachem East High School, was a special education teacher for BOCES in Stony Brook and at P.S. 274 in Brooklyn and was a long-term substitute at Finley last year.
With credit for last year’s service, Ms. Emmerman’s probationary period will run from Sept. 1, 2007 to Sept. 1, 2009.
Evelyn Goussis
Evelyn Goussis will teach at Woodhull Intermediate School. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in special and general education at St. Joseph’s College in 2005.
Ms. Goussis completed her student teaching requirements in the Harborfields and Hicksville school districts. She has previously worked in Huntington as a leave replacement at Southdown, Flower Hill and Washington Primary Schools.
Ms. Goussis’ probationary period is slated to run from Sept. 1, 2007 to Sept. 1, 2010. District officials reviewed seven applications and interviewed each candidate prior to recommending Ms. Goussis for appointment.
