Zach Howell Wins 2007 Dellacave Award
Huntington’s Zach Howell has earned the 2007 Dellacave Award recognizing him as Suffolk’s top male high school athlete. The award, which was presented by the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame, carried a $1,000 scholarship stipend.
Howell, who is headed to Duke University where he will play lacrosse, graduated last June from Huntington High School after an amazing four year academic and athletic career. The Blue Devil alumnus emerged on top of a field of 53 nominees and three other accomplished finalists.
An All-State football player as a senior, Howell completed 146 of 211 passes for 2,368 yards and 20 touchdowns – the most on Long Island. In three years as the Blue Devil varsity quarterback, he compiled a 73 percent completion rate, connecting on 367 of 501 passes for 5,337 yards and 50 touchdowns. He was picked off only 17 times.
Howell’s best game ever came last fall in the Suffolk Division III semifinals against Kings Park when he threw for 472 yards on 10-of-17 passing.
He was even better on the lacrosse field leading Huntington to three straight Suffolk and Long Island crowns and a pair of state titles. He earned All-American honors and was recruited by the top college programs in the nation.
Howell led Huntington’s 2007 lacrosse team with 98 points (54 goals, 44 assists). Over his career, he tallied 146 goals and 123 assists, for an all-time school record 269 points. He was one of the key players that helped the program win 63 consecutive games and the top ranking for two months this past spring in the national polls.
As a senior, Howell earned numerous awards, including the Ray Deren Memorial Scholarship, the American Legion Citizenship Award, the Frank Carino Award of the Huntington Fire Department and the T. Christopher Pettit Memorial Scholarship.
“Zach is an outstanding young man and it’s entirely fitting he has been recognized as Suffolk’s top male athlete,” Blue Devil football coach Steve Muller said. “He was an amazing player and leader for us.”
The seven year old award, named after Guy “Butch” Dellacave, honors one of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame founders as well as a leader in developing an educational organization that provides courses primarily to teachers, coaches and other school personnel. Mr. Dellacave himself was a longtime Connetquot school district teacher and a leader in high school basketball in New York State.
