Classes Battle in Finley Food Drive

Feeding hungry families is no joking matter and the J. Taylor Finley Middle School community takes its annual Thanksgiving food drive very seriously. Students, teachers and parents know that local folks are counting on a knock on their doors just in time for the holiday. It’s also a chance to have good, old-fashioned fun.

Year-in and year-out the Finley family has never been known to disappoint. The school turns the drive into a contest, as classes try to top each other. As is tradition, the classes of teachers Denise DeChiaro and Brian Reynolds engaged in the fiercest battle of all.

The drive, which was organized by guidance counselor Cathy Cain, collected more than 2,500 items – enough to feed dozens of families. Principal John Amato called the initiative a “great success” and no one is about to disagree.

“Since Ms. DeChiaro has claimed victory, she decided to pour salt on Mr. Reynold’s wounds by having her class put hundreds of Post-it notes on his car,” Mr. Amato said. The result of the Post-it papering was almost as impressive as the boxes of food collected during the drive.

“It was a great practical joke, but I never want to see another Post-it as long as I live,” Ms. DeChiaro joked. “There were literally thousands of them on his truck!”

The food and non-perishable items were picked up at the school by Trocaire House, which fights hunger in the community. “It was truly a great outpouring of assistance from our students which really helped support families in of our community,” Ms. DeChiaro said. “I'm really proud of the efforts of the students.”
