First Alumni Boys’ Soccer Game a Scoring Fest
Braving temperatures well into the 90s, the Huntington High School men’s soccer program held its first alumni game and former players showed they haven’t lost too many steps on offense as the two teams combined to score 17 goals.
Blue Devil head coach John Pagano jokingly referred to the game as “a classic defensive struggle,” but it was anything but that as alumni scored early and often in the Saturday contest as it played out on the high school’s synthetic turf field.
Jack Scott scored the first goal in alumni game history when he headed in a Pagano corner kick. The teams scored 16 more goals from there, including three by Ken Wood and a memorable 50-yard blast from Niko Rechul.
With two minutes remaining and the score knotted 8-8, Jose Sosa’s 20-yard shot gave the “white team a 9-8 lead they would never surrender. The “blue” team went down fighting, with a furious rally in the final 30 seconds, including a last ditch shot that went wide.
The game featured outstanding play from “elder statesman” Ryan Kuhn and critical contributions from brothers Rob and Andrew Finlayson. “Thanks to all who came out to make this inaugural match one to remember,” said Pagano, who plans on making the game an annual event.
