Catching up with Rich Medico

When Rich Medico attended Huntington High School he probably never dreamed that one day he would be a dentist, practicing in Buffalo. But, that’s exactly where he finds himself, married and with a newborn baby son, too. If you ask him, he’ll tell you that life has been very good to him.

After weighing a career as either as physical education teacher and coach or as a physical therapist, the Huntington alumnus decided to head back to college for more science courses and eventually found his way to the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, where he graduated in 2004.

“I am working as an associate dentist at a private practice locally here in a town called Lancaster,” Dr. Medico said. “There are four full time dentists including myself. The office is new with great technology and it is very nice.”

Dr. Medico, who is employed at Lancaster Dental Associates, completed a general practice residency program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo in June 2005. The next month he was married to Christina, a native of Buffalo.

At Huntington High School, where he graduated in 1993, Dr. Medico always had a certain presence about him. His charisma and good hearted nature drew people to him and both classmates and teachers enjoyed being in his company. The same is true today as his Upstate patients value his reassuring demeanor and sunny outlook.

Dr. Medico played baseball at J. Taylor Finley Junior High School and soccer through his freshman year, but he was best known as a Blue Devil wrestler, winning league championships in 1992 and 1993 and a string of invitational titles and serving as team captain. He was one of the key cogs in the Huntington mat machine. He went on to compete at the college level at both SUNY Brockport and SUNY Cortland, where he ultimately earned his undergraduate degree.

Dr. Medico said he’s enjoying being a father for the first time. His new baby son, Anthony Mark, was born Dec. 14 and weighed in at 8 lbs. 10.7 ounces. “He is very healthy and is gaining weight like a champ,” Dr. Medico said.

His wife, Christina Medico graduated from Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart in 1998. She is a pediatric nurse practitioner and grew up in Tonawanda outside of Buffalo. In an interesting twist, she also graduated with a Master’s degree the same day Dr. Medico received his dental degree in May 2004.0n May 2004.

Although he is doing well, both personally and professionally in the Buffalo area, Dr. Medico hopes one day to return to Long Island. His parents live in the area and his brother Anthony (Huntington, ’91) currently resides in the Huntington School District.

“We built a house here in Amherst and we really like it,” Dr. Medico said. “The neighborhood is very nice. Things are really good here and I already love being a father.”
