Catching up with Leigh Boege
Leigh Boege’s years at Huntington High School were marked by a noticeable consistency in the classroom and in the athletic arena. It’s a trait the Class of 2006 member is duplicating at Marist College where she’s earning solid grades and emerging as a key player on the lacrosse team as a sophomore.
Boege fits in perfectly with the NCAA Division I Red Foxes. Affable and well-liked by all, she remains one of Huntington’s most popular students in recent years and has won over the Marist campus, too.
She’s doing well at college and she’s happy. “Everything has been very good at school,” Boege said. “I actually switched positions this past fall. During one of our tournaments, instead of playing low attack they put me in at midfield and I got stuck on defense and performed well so my coach decided that would be my new position.”
Boege was a three-sport athlete for the Blue Devils, starring on the tennis, soccer and lacrosse teams. She chose lacrosse as her college sport and although a foot injury limited her to eight games last spring, the Marist coaches consider her one of their top underclassmen.
The Red Foxes finished last season with a 10-6 record and are looking to climb another few rungs on the NCAA ladder in 2008. “Our team looks very well,” Boege said. “We had very good games against Delaware and Temple in a tournament this fall. The freshmen we took in are very good assets to our team, and only losing one player last year shows that our team will only get better. We have big competition in playing Denver this spring when we go to Colorado for spring break, but I hope we do very well against them.”
College life agrees with Boege and she is enjoying the experience. Marist is located in Poughkeepsie, which makes a quick trip home to Huntington easy to navigate.
The daughter of Scott and Eileen Boege, Leigh’s sister Kristen graduated last May from Northwestern University after starting on three consecutive NCAA Division I national championship lacrosse teams there.
After three semesters of college, the Huntington grad is pleased with where she stands. “Everything has been good,” Boege said. “School is much easier than freshman year because I’m starting to get the hang of it. Our team is happier and closer than ever, and I have been having an absolutely great time at school this past semester.” Marist appears to be the perfect fit for her.
The 5’8 Boege scored her first career goal against Niagara on April 13. Her first college point came several weeks earlier when she assisted on a goal at Lafayette on February 28.
When she is not playing lacrosse, Boege can often be found coaching others. This past summer she helped coach the Long Island Elite Yellow Jackets team consisting of players who will graduate in 2012, gave private lessons and worked in the Huntington Village lacrosse camp.
