Catching up with Dan Maier
Dan Maier is back, safe and sound in the United States after spending the past two years on a work assignment in Shanghai, China. It’s an experience he will always treasure, although he’s definitely happy to be home.
Mr. Maier, his wife Beth and children Ryan and Timothy are settled back in Sudbury, Massachusetts where he works as worldwide vice president for inside sales at PTC (NASDAQ: PMTC), one of the world’s leading software technology companies.
A graduate of Loyola College in Maryland, Mr. Maier is a member of Huntington’s Class of 1992. He played on the Blue Devil basketball, tennis and volleyball teams and was very involved in all aspects of school life, including a variety of clubs.
According to its website, PTC “provides leading product lifecycle management, content management and dynamic publishing solutions to more than 50,000 organizations worldwide. PTC customers include the world's most innovative companies in manufacturing, publishing, services, government and life sciences industries.” The company has more than 3,000 employees in several dozen countries.
Mr. Maier’s current position in PTC has brought increased worldwide responsibilities. “I manage our inside sales force here at PTC comprising over 60 people in the USA, Spain, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Moscow, Bangalore, Seoul, Taipei, Tokyo, and Osaka,” he said.
Mr. Maier’s mother, Nora, served on the Huntington School Board for many years, including stints as its president and vice president. Mrs. Maier was also very involved in the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, serving as an officer with that group, too.
Following his college graduation, Mr. Maier was a commissioned artillery officer in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany for a healthy stretch of his military commitment, which followed his participation in ROTC during college.
Back in America, the Maier’s have had to adjust. “We have endured culture shock moving back and miss the energetic atmosphere that Shanghai has built and thrived under these past few years,” Mr. Maier said. “We enjoyed our time in China and were able to travel and experience the culture that makes China such a unique place.”
At Huntington, Mr. Maier won the coveted William Class Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of Huntington’s legendary coach and athletic director who came to the district in 1929 and retired in 1963. He also earned the respect of classmates, teammates, teachers and coaches for his clean-cut, hard working and conscientious way of conducting himself in and out of school.
“We welcomed Timothy Conlin Maier on December 11th, our second son, whose middle name is Nora's maiden name,” Mr. Maier said. “He is fantastic and doing well.” Mr. Maier’s cousin, Dan Ingham, a member of Huntington’s Class of 2004, is Timothy’s godfather.
As much as Mr. Maier and his wife enjoyed their stay in China, they are pleased to be back in this country. “We enjoy being closer to our families now and hope to return to Huntington in the summer,” he said.
