Blue Devil Basketball Honors
Visbal and McCourt

The Huntington girls’ basketball team lost many of its most talented players to graduation in June 2009, so there were low expectations around Suffolk for the Blue Devils this past winter.
Seniors Lauren Visbal and Meredith McCourt ignored the pre-season forecast and helped lead Huntington to its fifth consecutive play-off appearance. The dynamic duo was honored last month during an athletic dinner in the Huntington High School gym.
McCourt, who earned the MVP award, captained the team en route to All-League and Academic All-County honors. “She was a player I relied upon because she was someone you could trust on the court to do whatever was best for her teammates,” said Brad Reminick, Huntington’s head coach.
“The greatest compliment I think you can give an athlete is that ‘she rarely makes a mistake,’” Reminick said. “Meredith was always doing something positive on the court or at practice. Her hustle, determination and drive to succeed will be missed, but most of all it will be her laughter that I will miss the most. Every day she made it enjoyable to come to work because, unlike any athlete I have ever coached, Meredith always made me laugh. To know her is to love her but to coach her has truly been a privilege.”
Visbal, who was a team captain, garnered the Coach’s Award after closing out her Huntington career in fine fashion. “Lauren’s role on the team was to be a physical force down low and to intimidate on defense,” Reminick said. “Every game she was matched up with the opponents’ top forward and only rarely didn’t she come through and shut her player down.”
The teenager displayed a knack for making sure the younger players on the team felt included during practices and outside events. “She was a true leader and a great captain,” Reminick said. “Through her emotional talks to the team and numerous pasta parties, Lauren’s effort to always unite the family never went unnoticed.”
