Huntington Science Program Enjoys Great Year

 

Science students at Huntington High School enjoyed a successful year with a long list of honors and awards. Some are even engaged in prestigious summer study programs.

 

“This has been an outstanding and truly amazing year for science research at the high school,” said David Casamento, the outgoing science department chairman. Mr. Casamento has accepted a position in East Williston. Huntington officials said a decision is near on a replacement.

 

Mr. Casamento said a “truly amazing group of students” had earned honors at a wide assortment of competitions and science fairs throughout the recently completed school year.

Nassau Community College Science and Humanities Symposium

• Anthony Kouttron – First place

• Everett Coraor – Second place

New York Science & Engineering Fair

• Everett Coraor – One of six first place winners.


Long Island Science Congress

• Rachel Bosco – High Honors

• Anthony Kouttron – High Honors

• Everett Coraor – Achievement

• Will Hannon – Achievement

• Tyler May – Achievement

• Molly Prep – Achievement

• Brittany Pucci-Schmitz – Achievement

• Ari Moskowitz – Meritorious

• Jason Chisolm – Meritorious

• Jake Goldstein – Honorable Mention

Molloy College

• Molly Prep – First Division Honors Award

 

Accepted to Summer GARCIA program at Stony Brook University

The just completed year saw 23 Huntington student enrolled in the high school science research program. “A few awards have been garnered by these students in conjunction with students who are not enrolled in the science research class, but who participate in the science club and/or the Science Honor Society,” Mr. Casamento said.

• Julie and Kaja Coraor – Fourth Place – “Write it/Do it”

• John Coffey and Matty Petryk – Fifth Place – “Write it/Do it”


National Science Photo Award

• Ari Moskowitz

 

Regional Chemistry Olympiad

• Julie Coraor – High Honors – Qualified for National competition

• Adam Cerini – Honors

• Caroline Fante – Honors

• David Stillman – Honors

 

National Chemistry Olympiad

• Julie Coraor – Honors (One of seven in New York)

 

There are currently 26 students incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors registered for the 2010/11 Huntington High School science research program. Another 16 incoming freshmen are slotted for Science Research-9.
