Senior Class President Speaks of 20/10 Vision

One of the loudest ovations at Huntington High School’s 149th commencement exercises last Friday night was reserved for Class of 2010 President Meredith McCourt.

“I’d like to say a few words about vision and the class of 2010,” Ms. McCourt told classmates and the crowd of more than 2,000. “We all know that normal vision is 20/20, but 20/10 vision is exceptional; and this class of 2010 has always had exceptional vision. Vision to see the incredible things they could accomplish with their many talents and hard work.”

Ms. McCourt, who compiled a 94 average, is headed to Fairfield University after four great years at Huntington. She earned varsity letters in basketball, soccer, track and field and lacrosse and was named a state scholar athlete.

“My parents have put four kids through the Huntington Schools and they always said that this class is special,” Ms. McCourt told the graduation day crowd. “I think that many of you, parents and faculty, would agree with this assessment, and why not? Our class if filled with so many extremely talented and dedicated individuals.”

She acknowledged classmates’ talents in athletics and the arts and noted those “with big hearts who are always willing to help those in need.” Ms. McCourt also paid tribute to the “intellectuals among us, who grapple with great ideas and seek insights into the big questions.”

The new Huntington alums will soon be off to many of the best college and universities in the country. The 256-member group earned $7.7 million in scholarships.

“The Class of 2010 is filled with bright and engaging students, with the vision and drive to challenge themselves to be better,” Ms. McCourt said. “There is no doubt in my mind that this class will make its unique mark on the world. Graduates, as you go out into the real word and experience more, envision for yourselves a brighter future, but always remember what you’ve accomplished here at Huntington and the relationships you’ve built over the last four years. Never lose sight of that exceptional 20/10 vision!”
