Raffaela Montesano has been named director of science and instructional technology in the Huntington School District. She replaces David Casamento who held the position for two years before leaving last month to take a similar post in East Williston.
Ms. Montesano obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology at Cornell University in 1976. She earned a Master of Science degree in education in 2000 at Hofstra University, where she secured state certification as an administrator in 2004.
Prior to coming to Huntington, Ms. Montessano was the science chairperson (grades 6-12) in the Glen Cove City School District for four years. She worked as a science teacher in Harborfields from September 1999 to June 2006 and as a part-time science aide at North Shore High School in Nassau from September 1996 to August 1999. She participated in an Eastern Suffolk BOCES summer curriculum writing project in 2000 and 2001.
Prior to recommending Ms. Montesano for appointment, district officials reviewed the resumes of 47 applicants and pre-screened 14 candidates before a selection committee consisting of Dr. Joseph Giani, assistant superintendent for personnel and general administration, Dr. Kenneth Card, Jr., assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, Dr. Carmela Leonardi, principal of Huntington High School, Dr. Vicki L. Mingin, executive director of special education and student support services and teachers Angela Berner, Christine Nugent and Craig McKee conducted four formal interviews.
A central office committee that included Superintendent John J. Finello and Drs. Giani and Card conducted a final interview with Ms. Montesano before a positive recommendation was made to trustees.
