Strong Finish for Finley Girls’ Lax
A strong core of players helped lift the J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls’ lacrosse team to an 8-1-1 record this past spring. The 32-player squad hummed with all cylinders firing under coaches Jennifer Vettorato, Linda Roth and Marissa Bergmann.
Vettorato noted the Falcons “player together as a team each day. Our overall record was a great accomplishment.” Getting a team of seventh and eighth graders to quickly click is no easy task, but the coaching staff was relentless in their instruction, drilling and pursuit of excellence across every position
“This year’s team was made up of skilled athletes that excelled each practice and game,” Vettorato said. “They all got along well and played like a family. I am proud of their success this season.”
The top players on the team included seventh graders Alyssa Amorison, Anna Tesoriero and Daniella Schoen and eighth graders Kira Bergman, Emily Maggio and Malese Dale, according to Vettorato.
Heather Forster, a superb seventh grader, was the leading Falcon goal scorer. The center has a powerful left-handed shot. Tesoriero led Finley in saves. Bergman (MVP-Defense), Amorison (MVP-Offense) and Sarah Collins (Most Improved) earned special awards.
The only loss of the season came at the hands of Hauppauge, 19-13. The Falcons promptly shook off the defeat and won their next five games to close out the schedule on a high note.
Forster, Amorison, Tesoriero and goalie Fiona Geier, who is “skilled and sees the field well,” according to Vettorato, will be the key returnees in 2011.
