Jeffrey Bishop Wins Kevin Sze Scholarship
A scholarship in memory of Kevin Sze, who will always be remembered around the Huntington School District as a kind and gentle soul, was presented to gifted senior Jeffrey Bishop, who is headed to George Washington University in the fall.
The $1,600 scholarship was bestowed by Woodhull School nurse Martha Ironman and Mr. Sze’s mother, Mae, at the high school’s senior academic awards night, at which tens of thousands of dollars of scholarships were dispensed to the top members of the Class of 2009.
Mr. Sze, who attended Woodhull, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma during the summer following fifth grade. “He underwent surgeries, chemo and radiation therapies and through it all managed to remain positive and upbeat,” Mrs. Ironman said. “For 16 years he gave 100 percent to all that he did.”
The happy teenager passed away in April 2008 during his junior year at Huntington High School. A scholarship fund in his memory was quickly established “to recognize seniors who have faced an obstacle and how that obstacle was overcome,” Mrs. Ironman said.
Applicants were asked to describe how a particularly difficult experience had served to help them in life. “Each senior who applied for this scholarship wrote about a medical, emotional and physical obstacle,” Mrs. Ironman told a crowd of more than 200 gathered in the high school auditorium.
After reading through all the applications, a committee selected Mr. Bishop as the scholarship’s first recipient. He is very active and well-respected at the high school, compiling a fine academic record and building many strong friendships.
“He has been involved in several of the high school theater arts productions and is one of the drum majors in the marching band,” said Mrs. Ironman about Mr. Bishop. “He is also participating in the Huntington internship program, exploring the career of a social studies teacher. Jeffrey, as Kevin did, gives 100 percent to all he does.”
Mr. Bishop accepted the scholarship with a wide smile on his face.
