Blue Devil Sports News
The Huntington boys’ soccer program’s second annual alumni game was a rousing success. The “blue” team topped the “white” squad in a spirited contest, 3-2. Jose Alfaro (Class of 2005) scored two goals and added an assist for the victors.
Over 30 returning alumni gathered on the Blue Devil Stadium turf, including John Bifulco (Class of 1970) and six 2008 graduates. Andrew Finlayson and David Spear anchored the “blue” defense and Cassidy Hamman made several acrobatic saves. The “white team” was led by Ryan Kuhn, Alex Brown and varsity assistant coach Jason Suarez.
Girls’ Lax Turns Page
Nancy Wilson took over as the Huntington varsity girls’ lacrosse coach this spring and after a rocky start, the Blue Devils started winning on a regular basis. “The girls really adjusted to the new philosophy and challenges presented,” she said. “I am so proud of where they have come from and really think the world of them.”
At the senior athletic awards dinner, Matte Scully (MVP-Offense), Faith Maybeck (MVP-Defense), Julie Forster (MVP-Midfield) and Sarah Paar (Coaches Award) were honored.
Girls’ Track and Field Wraps-up
Huntington’s Maria Marascia placed fifth in the 400m intermediate hurdles at the Suffolk track and field championships, breaking her own school record in the event. Lauren Visbal also took fifth place, breaking her school mark in the triple jump. Kathryn Schmitz was 10th in the 800m run and Cristina Badalamenti finished 18th in the long jump.
In the earlier divisional championship, Marascia was second in the 400m IM hurdles, Visbal was fourth in the triple jump and Badalamenti placed fourth in the long jump with a career-best effort. The 4 x 100m relay team of Dania Merilin, Visbal, Alisa Sosa and Alexandra Krapf finished seventh. The 4 x 400m relay squad consisting of Alexandra Martinolich, Badalamenti, Marascia and Schmitz crossed the line in eighth place.
Combo Team Wins LI Lax Crown
A team consisting of a mix of varsity lacrosse players from Huntington and Walt Whitman high schools won the Long Island Laxfest championship at SUNY College at Farmingdale. The tournament featured seven tough games over a two-day period. The Huntington team was coached by Jerome Merkerson, who also coaches the seventh grade team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School.
Huntington’s Will Coffey scored the game winning goal in the finals when he found the back of the net with about a minute remaining in overtime to seal the victory over Team Long Island. A celebration ensued with players mobbing each other. In addition to Coffey, the key Blue Devils include Duncan Murchison, and Patrick O'Brien at midfield, Nick Saputo, Jack Castelli and Jimmy Roselli at attack, Ryan Mulligan, Pete Kingston and Calvin Bollar on defense and John McGrath in goal.
The combination Huntington-Walt Whitman team plays other elite select squads at lacrosse tournaments up and down the East Coast.
Finley Boys’ Track Goes 5-1
The boys’ track and field team at J. Taylor Finley Middle School finished the spring season with a 5-1 record under coach Ken Krummenacker. The Falcons claimed victories over Wyandanch (75-33), Oldfield (59-55), Elwood (67-52), Hauppauge (63-46) and Kings Park (93-20). A loss to East Northport (55-46) was the only blemish in an otherwise perfect year.
The 34-member team was led by seventh graders Tyler Wolfe and Josh Watkins and eighth graders Grant Siele and Mike Lentinello.
“These athletes were consummate good sports,” Krummenacker said about the team. “They respected and cheered for their opponents in every meet.”
