Mike McCourt is More than Satisfied

Michael McCourt has had a good run at Huntington High School and he’s enjoying these finals days before graduation.  He will attend Penn State University in the fall and intends to study political science.

“Mike is a mature and hard working individual,” said Bernadette Walsh, Huntington’s college counselor. “Teachers comment that he is a delight to have in class, a strong contributor to class discussions and a serious student.  I believe that Mike has acquired the skills necessary to be successful in a challenging college environment.”

Mr. McCourt has earned fine grades and completed numerous Advanced Placement and honors courses.  He’s been editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Dispatch, for two years, serves as vice-president of the Class of 2009, is a Sousaphone section leader in the Blue Devil marching band, earned membership in the National Honor Society and even did a stint on the fencing team.

“I am more than satisfied with the results of my time at Huntington High School,” Mr. McCourt said last week. “My teachers, friends and family have provided me with a comfortable environment in which I can effectively learn and set myself up for a bright future.”

“Mike is a gentle, compassionate young man who is conscientious and sensitive to those around him,” Mrs. Walsh said. “He has been an asset to our high school and will continue to give to his community.  Mike is mature, self confident, creative and determined.”

“I am unsure of my career plans, but am considering becoming a politician or teacher, among other things,” Mr. McCourt said.  His years in Huntington have produced a flood of memories – enough to last a lifetime.

Some of his favorite memories center on school events, including the homecoming float building and parade, Battle of the Classes, Playfest, “tailgating” before football, basketball and lacrosse games, his work with The Dispatch, student government and marching band and getting recognize by his classmates for his music mash-ups.

Who have his favorite teachers been?  Well, there’s Eileen Flanagan (Flower Hill), Sharon Levitt (Huntington Intermediate), Charles Williams (Finley Middle School), Frank Battista (Finley), Gina Pelletiere (Finley) and high school teachers James Graber and Mickey Baron.

“He is a student who will excel in and out of the classroom and leave his college a better place for having been a part of it,” said Mrs. Walsh about Mr. McCourt.  He never fails to reach out to friends in need, if only to offer warm words of support and encouragement or, if needed, much more.  He’s also been a role model for others, even at his still young age.

Thoughts of the future bring a sense of excitement to Mr. McCourt.  “I am eager to see where my Penn State education takes me, and I believe that my experiences in the Huntington School District will play an important role in who I become,” he said.
