Steve Mock Gets Tapped by Cornell
Huntington lacrosse star Steve Mock is headed to Cornell University in the fall. One of the most prolific scorers in Blue Devil history, Mock is joining one of the nation’s elite teams. The Big Red advanced to the NCAA Division I finals last month and were less than five seconds away from winning the national title before losing in overtime to Syracuse, 10-9.
Mock is in the top ten percent of the Class of 2009 and entered his final year of high school with a 94 academic average. “This gentleman has always impressed me with his devotion on and off the lacrosse field,” said Paul McDermott, longtime head coach of the Huntington lacrosse team. “Besides possessing excellent lacrosse skills, his personality and attitude strengthen his performance academically.”
Over the past three years on the Blue Devil varsity, Mock has scored 123 goals and notched 61 assists. He has been named All-Division three times, All-County twice and is an honorable mention All-American.
As a sophomore, Mock contributed 47 goals and 17 assists. He scored 38 goals and had 24 assists last year. This spring he found the back of the net 38 times and added 20 assists. His 184 points put him among the best Huntington players ever.
Mock is widely considered to be one of the top ten players on Long Island. “His offensive skills are excellent, along with great field sense,” McDermott said. “His dedication and positive attitude will contribute to any teams' success. He is a leader in the classroom and on the athletic fields.”
Cornell stormed through the post-season this spring and appeared set to claim the national crown before Syracuse tied the game with just 4.5 seconds remaining and then won it in overtime
