Frances Saravia Wins Principal’s Award
There’s no holding back Frances Saravia. The Huntington High School senior is an exceptional young woman who has her sights set on becoming a doctor. She has all the ingredients to do just that.
Huntington Principal Carmela Leonardi extolled the virtues of Ms. Saravia at last week’s senior academic awards night. “Frances is a very mature and determined young lady,” Dr. Leonardi said. “She is an excellent student with a weighted average of 95.561. She is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. She is an active member of Habitat for Humanity and she volunteers extensive time to her church.”
Dr. Leonardi said that in choosing a recipient for the award, she “looks not only at academic achievement, but also at personal commitment to learning, motivation and effort. Leadership and involvement in the life of our school community are also factors taken into consideration.”
Ms. Saravia will attend the University of Delaware in the fall. She plans to major in biology and ultimately go on to medical school. The senior has no small amount of charisma, confidence and enthusiasm and it shows.
“Throughout her high school career, Frances has consistently demonstrated a strong level of academic and personal commitment enrolling in classes that have tested her confidence and heightened her senses,” said Bernadette Walsh, Huntington’s college counselor. “With unwavering motivation and determination, this bilingual young woman has excelled. Her academic talents are undisputed and she truly takes ownership of the learning process, seeking assistance and guidance from her teachers. Frances’ transcript speaks for itself. She is a competitive learner who strives for mastery in each subject area.”
Dr. Leonardi said that Ms. Saravia “embodies the intellectual and social strengths that distinguish her as a self-motivated learner and leader.” Her lofty grade point average was compiled while taking a battery of Advanced Placement and honors courses.
“Frances is a serious philanthropist,” Mrs. Walsh said. “She volunteers her time generously to several community organizations including the Boys and Girls club and Huntington Hospital. Frances doesn’t take her good fortune for granted.”
