Suffolk Bar Association Awards Scholarship to Chris Lau

The Suffolk County Bar Association awarded its $1,000 scholarship this year to Christopher Lau, Huntington High School’s 2009 valedictorian.  A check was presented at the SCBA’s annual meeting at its Hauppauge’s headquarters by Lynn Adair Kramer, former SCBA president and chair of the scholarship fund.

Mr. Lau, who will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, entered his senior year with a 103.8 grade point average and has continued to put the “pedal to the metal” academically, excelling in each of his classes.

“He is a passionate learner, an eloquent communicator, an open minded humanitarian and a sincere friend,” said Bernadette Walsh, Huntington’s college counselor. “Chris is a young man who is as devoted and enthusiastic about his academic growth as he is his personal growth.   He is always looking for a challenge!”

Outside of class, Mr. Lau has participated on the varsity basketball and track teams.  He’s also been active in numerous academic honor societies, written for the school newspaper, The Dispatch, pursued his musical talents in the band, served as vice-president of the student government and been heavily involved in several humanitarian endeavors, including Project Nicaragua and the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative.

Mr. Lau intends to study finance in college.  In his free time he enjoys playing a variety of sports with his friends, including football and volleyball.  His volunteer work has led him to Nicaragua several times and he helped raise thousands of dollars to build a pair of houses in an impoverished village.

The Suffolk County Bar Association scholarship committee interviewed some of the top seniors in the county before selecting Mr. Lau for the one annual scholarship it awards.
