Top Blue Devil Athletes Receive Suffolk Gold Keys
Fourteen Blue Devil athletes were presented with Section XI Gold Key awards at last week’s 41st Senior Athletic Awards Banquet in Huntington High School’s Louis D. Giani Gymnasium.
The Gold Key is the highest honor a Suffolk athlete can receive for sports participation, according to Huntington Director of Athletics Georgia D. McCarthy. This year’s Blue Devil recipients include Joe Brown, Brian Cotter, Julie Forster, Jacob Gayle, Michelle Grenier, Olivia Hayes-Hurley, Maria Marascia, Stevens Merilan, Caitlin Ortiz, Sarah Paar, Dylan Payne, Brian Ruggiero, Kathryn Schmitz and Matte Scully.
“The Gold Key is a county award emphasizing participation in interscholastic athletics while recognizing proficiency in performance,” Mrs. McCarthy said. The award is presented in every Suffolk high school to students who have earned a minimum of eight athletic letters on varsity or junior varsity teams between their sophomore and senior years
Huntington Superintendent John J. Finello formally presented the awards to recipients. “These young men and women deserve to be honored for being able to juggle the demands of sports and academics and for taking advantage of everything Huntington High School has to offer,” Mr. Finello said.
