Long Live French Poetry
Huntington students continue to challenge themselves by tackling difficult courses and engaging in academic competitions against some of Long Island’s smartest young people. What’s even more impressive, school officials say, is the success these teenagers are finding.
“Huntington High School is filled with some of the best and brightest America has to offer,” Superintendent John J. Finello said. Need proof? In the past few months, a long list of elite colleges and universities has sent acceptance letters to dozens of members of this year’s senior class.
Teacher Deidre Mayer recently entered six of her top students in the Long Island Language Teacher’s Assn. poetry contest. Four of the teenagers earned honors. “The achievements of our students this year have been amazing,” Mr. Finello said.
In the category of original French poetry, Leslie Flores placed first for her poem, "Quand Je Te Retouve Encore" (when I find you again). Maya Horton was third for her untitled original poem and Camille Barron won honorable mention recognition.
Caitlin Etri won first place in the poetry recitation category. “She spent several hours preparing for a taped performance of “La Chene et Le Roseau,” a classic poem by Jean de La Fontaine,” said Ms. Mayer.
This marks the second LI contest where Ms. Flores has won a prize for her touching poetry. She finished second on her level in the American Association of Teachers of French contest last December.
Ms. Mayer said she “is thrilled and proud of the creativity” of her students.
