Huntington School Board Notes


Huntington School Board members approved a professional services agreement between the district and the architectural firm of Burton Behrendt Smith for projects at Jack Abrams Intermediate School and Washington and Southdown primary schools. 

 

The work includes creation of a new asphalt play area (budgeted at $72,000) at Jack Abrams School, irrigation of the athletic field used by JV and varsity teams at Washington School (budgeted at $64,000) and replacement of the Southdown School fire alarm system (budgeted at $112,000).

 

For their services, BBS will receive 6.75% of the construction cost.



Trustees approved the resignation of J. Taylor Finley Middle School foreign language teacher Andrew Chabot and granted a child care related leave of absence to Huntington High School ESL teacher Nadine Araoz, effective through June 30, 2009.



Trustees approved full-times appointments for Lori Bennett (senior clerk typist in the district office), Danielle Cordella (senior clerk typist at the high school), James Muller (district-wide maintenance worker), Terrish McCoy (custodian at Jack Abrams Intermediate School) and Tina McDermott (guard at the high school).
The part-time appointment of Gail Mahoney was approved.  She will serve as the district’s “homeless liaison” through June 30, 2009 at a salary of $50 per hour, which is funded by a grant.



Trustees approved a change order with Frendolph Construction Corp. related to the renovation of science lab rooms at Huntington High School.  “In order to have this bid come in within budget, we negotiated a decrease change order with the contractor in the amount of $18,000” explained David H. Grackin, assistant superintendent for finance and management services.  “Our staff has taken on the responsibility of the three items that were removed from the contract.”

 

The three items include: Removal of the existing ceiling system and lighting from rooms 208, 208A, 208B and 209 ($5,500); removal and reinstallation of the existing ceiling system from rooms 114 and 115 ($2,500); and abatement and disposal of asbestos flooring, carpeting and cove base in rooms 208, 208A and 208B ($10,000).

 

The new contract sum is $141,000.  The company is located at 399 Route 109 in West Babylon.  David Bozuhoski of the architectural and engineering firm, BBS is the project manager for the work.



Salary schedule changes were approved for teachers Ellen Blanchard, William Byrne, Joseph Cohen, Mary DeBruin, Vincenza Caruso, Casey Goldberg, Susan Hahn, Jamie Joseph, Terrance Judson, Kathleen Mallen-Ozimkowski, Martha Reilly, Heather Swan, Amy Worth, Nancy Burke-Allard, Maria Lanzot and Donna Nugent.



Bids for food and food related products needed by the school lunch program were awarded to Snapple Distributors of NY, Inc., Jim McCoy & Son, Inc., Coca Cola, American Classic, T.A. Morris Sons, Inc., Mivila Foods Corp., Savory Food Service, Appco Paper and Plastics Corp., Jamac Frozen Foods Corp. and Jay Bee Distributors.



Teacher Nadine Araoz’s tenure date was changed from Dec. 12, 2009 to Dec. 12, 2010, thus extending her probation since she will be on a child care related leave of absence through June 30, 2009.



Elementary school teachers Vincenza Caruso and Elizabeth Moran have been recalled from the excess teacher list, effective Sept. 1.



Bids for art and audio visual equipment were awarded to Westar Solutions ($2,020), Neptune Photo ($1,193.50), B & H photo ($1,847.75), Ceramic Supply ($6,976.57), Whitman Sewing Machines ($698) and Nasco ($493.40). 

 

The district mailed 15 bids and nine responses were received.  They were opened on July 2.  Department director Joan Fretz analyzed the bids.
