Washington Primary School Principal Marsha Neville recently presented awards to October’s top students and introduced November’s Featured Artists.

The longtime district educator presented certificates to 21 Washington Ways Award recipients for their outstanding performance in classrooms and all around the building, including playground areas.

October’s honorees include Russell Chowdhury, Kaylee Bermudez Gomez, Yulissa Velasquez Santos, Graham Tarry, John Hernandez, Abigail Arelt, Isabella Ulloa, Angie Navarrete, Edwin Lopez, Isabelle Colato, Natalie Mullaly, Hennie England, Colby Curran, Madelyn Falk, Andrew Lopez, Timoleon Tiliakos, Karla Vanegas-Alvarado, Carlos Figueroa, Cristian Mejia, Nathali Reyes and Jeffrey Flores Andrade.

The entire classes of teachers Dianne Davis and Melissa Gonzalez were also honored.

Here’s how the monthly Washington Ways program works:

White tickets are awarded weekly for good behaviors and actions in the classroom. White ticket winners are honored with special recognition in their classroom at the end of each week and their names are announced every Monday morning.

Red tickets are presented to individuals for especially good behavior outside of classrooms, including in hallways, buses, the playground and cafeteria, etc. At the end of the month, the student in each class with the greatest number of red tickets is recognized with a special certificate. Mrs. Neville announces the names of the honorees over Washington’s PA system.

Students are quite aware of the Washington Ways program and the reason it exists. They are happy to be recognized with a colorful ticket. They quickly give the ticket to their classroom teacher so a notation can be made and it can be credited to them. They love telling their parents about their recognition, too.

Entire classes can earn blue tickets for positive group behavior outside of the classroom. Blue tickets are also awarded to the two classes within the building with the most tickets overall.

Featured Artists of the Month

November’s Featured Artists are an impressive group of youngsters. Their artwork is currently on display in the school’s main hallway outside the cafeteria. The students have been working with art teacher Maria Mazzola.

Washington’s Featured Artists include Marcos Bonilla Yanes, Marthe Plaisimond, Palmer Laycock, Genesis Perez Argueta, Lucca Fiore, Brighson Saint-Louis, Samuel Spells, Shane Hepworth, Sabino Gomez Morales, Valerie Alfaro, Artturi Landau, Aahana Chauhan, Robbie Campbell, Angeline Arreaga Vega, Stella Talaba, Manuel Guardado, Brandon Watts and Ashley Alexis.

“It’s wonderful to be able to recognize our Washington Ways Award winners and our most recent Featured Artists,” Mrs. Neville said. “We are so proud of each one of our students.”
