Principal's Message

Fall 2008

School opened with great excitement with the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and the unveiling of our new name “Jack Abrams Intermediate School.”  Community members joined our students, parents and staff in honoring Mr. Abrams and his family for his years of devotion to the Huntington School District.  A wonderful reception immediately followed the ceremony sponsored by our PTA.   Musicians from our Huntington High School staff and students added great ambiance to the day.

Students have settled in to the new school year and individual classroom routines.  Our Meet the Teacher nights were very well attended and fall conferences are scheduled.  Please contact your teacher if you have not yet made an appointment.  The first quarter report card will be given out when parents meet their child’s teacher.

Our first Citizen of the Month and Circle of Champions awards have been given out.   Each month parents of chosen Citizen of Month students will receive a letter   inviting them  to our monthly assemblies. Circle of Champions are selected each month by teachers and our Dean, Mr. Armyn announces their names over the loud speaker and students are presented with a certificate.  Each of these awards are explained in the Handbook sent home the first week and/or featured in “Thursday Thoughts” our weekly newsletter. Exemplary citizenship and consistent effort in the classroom are only two ways we encourage our “Huskies” to be the best they can be.

Our report cards clearly define how students are doing in school academically and their behaviors seen in learning. To receive the Principal List letter (for 5th and 6th grade) students must meet the following criteria: “4” in Math, Science, Social Studies and the Language Arts areas of Reading and Writing; and at least “3” in the Language Arts areas of Speaking, Listening and Spelling and getting at least “G’s” in all special area classes and in behavior areas.  To be on the Honor Roll List (5th and 6th grade students) after each marking period, those students who receive a combination of “4” and “3” in all major subjects (Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) and at least G’s in all specials and behavior areas will be named on the Honor Roll List. 4th graders may receive an “on a roll” sticker for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th marking periods if they show improvement in the academic areas.

The fall months will continue to be enriched with activities and events to promote a sense of community that supports learning.  Please watch for events sponsored by our students in our Thursday Thoughts.  I am looking forward to a great school year with our Huskie Families.

As we continue to encourage our students here at Jack Abrams Intermediate School, please support our efforts by prioritizing school work and being on time and keep absences down.

Sincerely,

Mary Stokkers

Principal
