Student Activities at Jack Abrams Intermediate

Huntington offers a comprehensive program of student activities, including nearly 60 clubs for grades 4-12.  Students can explore areas of interest ranging from the school newspaper to drama club productions, as well as engaging in community service related opportunities.  These activities support the educational mission of the school district and can foster success in later life.  Research has demonstrated that students who participate in after school activities are more likely to have higher grades, better attendance and fewer discipline referrals than those who do not participate.  All students are welcome to join as many clubs as their schedule permits.  The extracurricular program also allows for possible career exploration and many participants have pursued their interests on the college level and even professionally.  A list of clubs for each level is provided on this website.  Students are encouraged to meet with a club advisor for more information about a specific program.

Husky Student Leadership Organization The H.S.L.O. is our student government. The goal of the HSLO is to make the school better for students, staff, and the community; involve everyone in activities which promote school spirit and unity; and serve as an instrument of communication between the students and the staff

Environmental Club The goal of the club is to register our courtyard with National Wildlife as a Wildlife Habitat (photo of site only, no students). Encouragement of outdoor activities. The reason is to support our environment, learn about our local wildlife, recycling and metamorphosis. Note: The group uses no chemicals or power tools. The idea for the club was student generated.

Newspaper Club The children are assigned articles the firs week and begin writing. Editing takes place the second week and rewrites are done the second and third weeks. We also go over article placement the third week. The articles are then hard copy printed and saved to a flash drive. Because of band and orchestra starting some of the children send their articles via email, then come in other mornings to work on their articles. Our main desire is to use the newspaper as an informative and creative tool in the school community. We have artists and now a photographer. The last week of the month is when Mary Stokkers reads it and we copy it. The issue is always embargoed until the Citizen of the Month Assembly.

Drama Club Last year the Drama Club produced their rendition of “Annie Jr.” There was two evening performances on February 1st and 2nd . The stage crew director was Mrs. Morea. More than 100 students took part in this musical. Over 50 students handled the acting and singing and the rest were “behind the scenes” working the lighting, sound and scenery.

The School of Rock Club The School of Rock Club is held weekly and is led by Mr. Esposito. The club allows sixth-grade students to play and compose rock songs using electric guitars, drums, keyboards, as well as traditional band and orchestra instruments. An end-of-the-year performance for the band is planned for May or June.

Husky Happenings Our school newspaper provides an outlet for those with journalistic interests. A newspaper is published monthly.

The Architecture Club Students study architectural design and create models.
