Huntington Trio Wins Top Honors
in NASA Contest

Three Huntington High School students have won top honors in their category in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s REEL science communication contest.

Huntington Advanced Placement Chemistry students Heather Forster, Suzie Petryk and Sofia Bialkowski earned first place nationally in the “Forest Fire Effects on Air Quality” category.

The Huntington trio will have an opportunity to work remotely with NASA producers and communications experts on a current NASA Earth Science story video in July. Participation will include access to NASA personnel through webinars and online communication tools, including Skype. Final produced stories/videos will be posted on a NASA website and possibly highlighted on www.nasa.gov.

Huntington juniors Charles Beers, Joe Sagainaw, Justin Edgar-McNerney and Patrick Lombardi were the national runners-up in the “How Ice Impacts Climate and Climate Impacts Ice” category.

Each of the two minute videos submitted by the Huntington teams is accessible on YouTube or by visiting NASA’s website at http://reelscience.gsfc.nasa.gov/.

“The NASA Earth Science missions video contest challenged high school students to produce a video communicating NASA Earth Science to younger students,” according to a contest overview. Students are consuming over 10 hours of media a day and video is increasingly important to communicate and inform about science. NASA encourages talented high school students to create videos that engage students in Earth Science.”

In addition to the two categories that the Huntington students mastered, the contest also included a third category: “Water on the Water Planet.”
