McConnell's Art Displayed at
The Heckscher

Brian McConnell's dazzling digital vector illustration, Angular Perspective, enjoyed a month-long run on display in the Long Island's Best Young Artists exhibition at the Heckscher Museum of Art. The Huntington High School junior was one of just 80 young artists out of nearly 300 submitting pieces to have his work exhibited.
The teenager is studying under Huntington art teacher Kasmira Mohanty. This year's Long Island's Best contest attracted entries from 49 public and private high schools, including many of the top artists in the region.
The inspiration for Mr. McConnell's artwork came from Ilya Bolotowsky's Untitled, a 1977 serigraph on arches paper that was displayed in the Heckscher's "Absorbed by Color: Art in the 20th Century" exhibition.
"When I first viewed Bolotowsky's work, it appeared to me as more than an arrangement of shapes on a board, but rather looked like an aerial view of a city block," Mr. McConnell said in an artist's statement that was affixed near his work while on display at the Heckscher. "With this in mind, I began creating my city block using the colors, lines, and shapes present in Bolotowsky's piece. To enhance my vision, I converted the flat surfaces into three-dimensional areas, adding volume where there previously had been none, and formed a third dimension where there had only been two."
