The Huntington High School boys' lacrosse team needed late-game heroics by Billy Martin to nip visiting Eastport-South Manor in Suffolk Division II play, 12-11. The Blue Devils led at halftime, 9-1 before the Sharks mounted a ferocious second half comeback, outscoring Huntington, 10-3.
Martin's winning goal came with one second remaining in the fourth quarter. He scored three goals in the game. Teammate Christian Fiordelisi had three goals and an assist. Ben Kocis also notched three goals.
Huntington took a 4-1 first quarter lead. The Blue Devils then went on a 5-0 second quarter run to build what appeared to be an insurmountable advantage, but ESM rallied.
Pat Reilly (two goals), Chris Schoen (one goal, one assist) and Connor Birchard (four assists) contributed to Huntington's offensive output. Tyler Greenhill stopped 15 shots between the pipes.
Tara Byrnes Homers Twice
The Huntington High School girls' softball team cruised past Comsewogue, 15-3 as sophomore Tara Byrnes crushed two homeruns and swatted out four hits, driving in seven runs. Tara's twin sister, Ellyn, went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kaitlin Wascher collected a pair of hits. Tara Byrnes was the winning pitcher.
HHS Cruises Past HB
The Huntington High School boys' lacrosse team cruised past visiting Hampton Bays last Saturday, 15-2. The Blue Devils led at halftime, 11-0.
Pat Reilly scored three goals to lead Huntington's offensive unit. Chris Schoen had two goals and two assists. Tom Plant (2g, 1a), Spencer Young (1g, 1a), Christian Fiodelisi (1g, 1a), Nick Arleo (1g, 1a), Matt Whitcher (1g), Billy Martin (1g), John Vanderschuyt (1g), Jeremy Gelb (1g) and Ryan Casale (1g) also scored.
Blue Devil staring goalie Tyler Greenhill recorded five saves before giving way to Dom Tesoriero, John Russo and Nick Stern, who combined to make four saves.
Senior Athletic Awards Dinner
Huntington High School's 45th annual senior athletic awards dinner will be held in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium on Thursday, June 6 at 6 p.m. The event is expected to draw more than 200 seniors, parents and coaches. The top senior-athletes will be presented with trophies by their respective coaches. Section XI Gold Key Award winners will also be announced.
RP Tops HHS
The Huntington High School girls' lacrosse team fell behind early against Rocky Point and was unable to make up its deficit during a 15-10 loss in Suffolk Division II play.
The Blue Devils trailed 8-3 at halftime before battling the Eagles to a second half stalemate that saw both teams score seven goals. Hannah Burnett had three goals and an assist. Alyssa Amorison and Katie Reilly both tallied two goals and an assist, respectively. Alexis Thompson had two goals. Sarah Fernandez had a goal and Emma DeGennaro added two assists.
Blue Devil goalies Anna Tesoriero (10 saves) and Fiona Geier (five saves) combined to stop 15 shots.
Montefusco Hurls Gem
Kevin Montefusco hurled a gem as the Huntington High School baseball team edged visiting Comsewogue, 2-1. Joe Cacciato banged out two hits and drove in a run to pace the Blue Devil offense. Montefusco was tagged for one unearned run. He fanned four and surrendered five scattered hits.
Wascher Collects Four Hits
Kaitlin Wascher was a perfect 4-for-4 to help lift the Huntington High School girls' softball team over visiting Harborfields, 9-3. Wascher scored three runs and drove in another. Blue Devil pitcher Ellyn Byrnes was close to brilliant on the mound.
