Fun for all at Flower Hill Math Night

When students are having fun, they usually give the activity they are engaged in their best effort. The youngsters who turned out for Flower Hill School's Math Night must have been enjoying it because they display a level of energy and enthusiasm that impressed their teachers and parents throughout the evening.

The annual event is equal parts learning initiative and celebration of mathematics. It provides plenty of examples of the real life impact of numbers and mathematical reasoning on folks of all ages.

"The students were grouped by grade level to work on math concepts that were related to the state's common core curriculum," Flower Hill Principal Marlon Small said. "The tasks were designed to not only be fun, but also as tools for parents to support their children at home."

Members of the Huntington High School Math Honor Society were on hand to assist Flower Hill teachers, who used a variety of methods to capture the imagination of students. For example, faculty members Tracey McManus and Veronica Quinlan used iPad applications while James Lauter utilized M& M candy colors for tally graph purposes. Glenn Edwards used clocks during his presentations and Claudia Mingin and Barbara Denis organized a math bingo game.

It was a fun night for participants and their parents. "The teachers incorporated games and activities that integrated technology into the evening's presentations, displaying the most current methodologies for enhanced instruction," Mr. Small said.

The night culminated with a family scavenger hunt.
