Surprises Expected for Huntington Boys' Spring Track

Ron Wilson is still developing his lineup for this season's Huntington High School boys' spring track and field team. The Blue Devil coach has many athletes slotted into specific events, but his work remains unfinished.

Huntington is coming off a fine 2012 campaign. The Blue Devils placed second in the League V standings behind Bellport and fourth in Suffolk Division II, trailing only Smithtown West, Copiague and North Babylon.

Big Blue finished in the top tier of last year's standings because of strong performances from Tyriek Johnson, who was the county's top hurdler and long jumper and Trayvon Toney and Shaheem Lewis, who were both among the top throwers in Suffolk.

Johnson and Toney have both graduated, but Lewis is back this spring. "Shaheem will return as the top discus thrower in the county based upon last year's results," Wilson said. "He just enjoyed a great indoor season, winning the Small School County Championship in shot put and reaching the state finals in Cornell where he placed ninth in a talented field.

Y'Majesty Allen is also coming back for the Blue Devils after being sidelined last year with an injury he sustained playing basketball. He competed during the winter track season for the first time and captured All-County and All-Long Island honors in the 300m dash. Allen advanced to the state finals where he place 13th. "We're looking for him to have an even better spring season," Wilson said.

Huntington's lineup will also be bolstered by middle distance runners Thomas Boisclair and Scott Gulizio and throwers Matteo McNeil and Devon Nelson in shot put and discus.

"We still have quite a few gaps to fill, but we are in no way out of it," Wilson said about the team's chances for success. "We have some surprises up our sleeves."
