Stuff the Bus Food Drive at HHS

When the Huntington High School student government sees a need, the organization doesn't just sit on its hands and do nothing. This is an activist group with plenty of energy and enthusiasm. Those qualities are being put to good use this week as the teenage leaders are pushing a "Stuff the Bus" campaign to restock the barren shelves of local food pantries.

The student government is collecting canned vegetables, canned soups, canned fruits, canned beans, spaghetti sauce, canned chicken/tuna, packaged macaroni and cheese, dry beans, rice, pasta, cereal, jars of peanut butter/jelly, hot chocolate mix and similar items.

The items are being organized after each collection day by student government officers Todd Colvin (president), Claire Beach (vice president), Monica Casabona (treasurer), Brent Filippini (corresponding secretary) and Hannah Pipolo (historian) and faculty advisors Anthony Troffa and Fred Bisogno.

The drive, which kicked-off on March 11, is set to conclude in grand fashion as Huntington Coach Corp. has donated the use of a bus, which will be "stuffed" and used to deliver hundreds of items to food banks later this week.

Organizers are asking community members to bring items to the Huntington High School gym on Saturday, March 23 between 8-10 a.m. as students "stuff the bus."

"Our goal is to stuff every inch of space inside the bus," Mr. Bisogno said. "There are hungry people in our community and we intend to help them."

Folks can stop by anytime during the three-hour food drive and drop-off any number of items. If someone can't make it to the school on March 23, they can drop off bags of items at the high school's main entrance any day this week.
