Scholar-Athlete Awards
Six winter varsity athletic teams at Huntington High School have earned prestigious New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Awards based on the grade point averages of respective team members.
The NYSPHSAA program requires a set number of participants from each team to have their GPAs averaged. Higher GPAs can be used offset lower ones. The team's GPA must be at least 90 to win the award. Coaches nominate their teams and guidance offices must certify the grades and transcripts submitted to the state office.
"This is a wonderful tribute to our hardworking student-athletes," said Georgia D. McCarthy, district director of health, physical education and interscholastic athletics. "They have set high goals athletically and academically and we are very proud of them."
The Huntington boys' basketball team reached scholar-athlete status as Connor Birchard, Alexander Castillo, Dixon Doblas, Scott Gulizio, Kenneth McCarthy, Kevin Montefusco and Lee Reiver combined for a GPA of 90.17.
The Blue Devil boys' swimming and diving team was recognized after Todd Colvin, Jesse Feldeman-Stein, Matthew McBride, Daniel McCarthy, Kevin McConnell, Cade McCormack, Matthew Pavelka, Benjamin Rosen-Packard, Jake Ryan, Drew Tenbus and Spencer Young compiled a GPA of 91.13.
Blue Devil girls' basketball players Brooke Baade, Ellyn Byrnes, Tara Byrnes, Joellen Ceide, Emma DeGennaro, Heather Forster, Emma Hughes, Caitlin Knowles, Mackenzie Maloney, Kathleen Nugent, Catherine Reilly, Lindsey Sullivan and Marygrace Trousdell compiled a joint GPA of 91.80, earning Huntington a Scholar Athlete Award in that sport.
The Blue Devil girls' fencing squad was honored after Kaitlin Wascher, Marissa Pashkin, Kaitlin Dayton, Melany Lanham-Ciancia, Kelly Tenbus, Charlotte Levinson, Kelly Askerberg, Hanae Wada, Katelyn Postiglione, Mary Sheehan, Elisa Medina-Jaudes, Emma Reilly, Tateana Khokhar, Adina Kirkland, Lianna DeChiaro, Andrea Cerini, Cristina Bateman, Anna Wertheim, Olivia Castillo, Brianna Kirkland, Taylor Choy, Carly Glowacky, Rachel Feltman, Ruhi Shah, Yardalie Daniel, Fiona Geier, Lydia Witt and Irina DeSimone compiled a 90.75 joint GPA.
