HHS Relay For Life Teams Continue Forming

Planning for this spring's Relay For Life at Huntington High School continues to move forward at a brisk pace. The sprawling fundraising event for the American Cancer Society will kickoff on Friday, May 17 at 6 p.m. and conclude with a closing ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at 6:30 a.m.

"Relay planning is going really well," said Molly Prep, who is coordinating the event along with fellow seniors Nikki Smoot and Gabe Goldman. "We've updated our board in the high school's main hallway. We had our first team captain meeting on February 27 and it seems like everyone is excited for this year's event."

As of Sunday, March 10, 58 teams comprised of 422 members had already registered on Huntington's Relay For Life webpage at www.relayforlife.org/huntingtonhighschoolNY. The early registrants have to date received pledges totaling about $23,600.

"We also just ended the Relay clothing sale and it was very successful," Ms. Prep said. "We raised over $2,000. We're also looking to get J. Taylor Finley Middle School involved this year. We might bring a few committee members over there to give a presentation and have a mini-kickoff to spread awareness and interest about the event."

Huntington's planning committee is also working on a candy-gram sale (possibly with lollipops that read "Cancer Sucks!"), but the group is not yet ready to release specifics on the initiative.

There are many different ways to keep up-to-date about Huntington's Relay For Life. The organizing committee has developed pages on Twitter (@HHSRELAY4LIFE), Facebook (HHSRELAYFORLIFE2013) and Instagram (HHSRELAY) to provide students and community members with current news and information.

"We've seen a constant growth of teams and seen a steady increase in fundraising," Ms. Prep said. "We're in really good shape!"

Those interested in joining the expanding list of Huntington Relay For Life sponsors through a donation of either goods or services can send a message to the planning committee at hhsrelay@gmail.com.

Cancer survivors who would like to be a guest of honor at special reception on Friday, May 17 at the Huntington Relay For Life are asked to contact American Cancer Society staff partner Alyssa Knudsen at (631) 300-3457 or alyssa.knudsen@cancer.org. Ms. Knudsen is working alongside Huntington's planning committee.
