Blue Devil Duo Honored by Town Board

Todd Colvin and Molly Prep, the top two student-athletes in Huntington High School's Class of 2013, were among a select group of seniors honored by the Huntington Town Board for "exemplifying outstanding academic and athletic achievement among the town's secondary school students."

Huntington's district director of athletics Georgia D. McCarthy, Blue Devil swimming coaches Gil Smith and Meg McConnell and student council faculty advisor Anthony Troffa were on hand at Town Hall for the ceremony.

Mr. Colvin is Huntington's valedictorian this year. A member of the high honor roll since seventh grade, his rigorous course load has included an array of honors and Advanced Placement classes.

President of Huntington's school-wide G.O., Mr. Colvin has been a leader among his classmates. He was a Relay For Life captain, sports reporter and editor for The Dispatch, the high school's student newspaper and a member of several honor societies.

Mr. Colvin captained the Blue Devil swimming and diving team, earning All-League honors twice and being named a New York State scholar-athlete four consecutive seasons. He also played lacrosse.

The recipient of many academic awards over the years, Mr. Colvin has participated in numerous Huntington High School activities over the years, including Safe Halloween, Stuff the Bus, homecoming, Special Olympics and the Physics Olympics.

Mr. Colvin is headed to the University of Virginia in the fall. "We will all miss his steadfast work ethic along with his charm and wit," said Georgia D. McCarthy, Huntington's district director of health, physical education and athletics.

Huntington's Class of 2013 salutatorian, Ms. Prep has also earned a spot on the high honor roll each year. She, too, has completed a long list of Advanced Placement courses.

A member of numerous honor societies, Ms. Prep has been vice-president of both the National Honor Society and the English Honor Society. She was a chair of this year's Relay For Life organizing committee, a key player in the high school's peer mediation program, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, a yearbook editor, contributor to the literary magazine Et Cetera and a participant in many other school activities and initiatives.

Ms. Prep, who is headed to New York University in the fall, has earned varsity letters with the Blue Devil cross country, winter and spring track and field teams. She's been a New York State scholar-athlete honoree for three consecutive years.

"Molly helped her coaches out tremendously in every season and found a love for running that will stay with her for the rest of her life," Ms. McCarthy said. "Her teachers and coaches are impressed with her work ethic and find her devotion to her family, studies, clubs and athletics to be uplifting. Molly will be missed as a student and as an athlete."

Ms. Prep, who interned this year with the high school English department, has tutored fellow students after school, helped organize "Backpacks for Back to School" and served as a teacher's aide for craft and theater programs at the Huntington Public Library. She has received numerous honors for her art and poetry, including Long Island Media Arts Best-in-Show Awards for her remarkable photography.

Every high school in the town nominated two seniors, one male and one female, for the award. Reinwald's Bakery and Bon Bons Chocolatier donated refreshments for the awards ceremony, which was held earlier this month.
