Murphy Appointed Long-Term

John Patrick Murphy has been appointed to work as a long-term substitute music teacher at Southdown and Washington Primary Schools through approximately April 18. Huntington School Board members approved the appointment during their public meeting this past Monday night.
Mr. Murphy will be filling in for tenured music teacher Susan Graber. He holds a BA in music from SUNY Fredonia and a master's degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music.
Currently a private piano instructor in New York City and Long Island, Mr. Murphy completed his state student teaching requirements in the Patchogue-Medford School District where he taught grades 1-5 general music, grades 6-8 general music and mixed chorus and AP Music Theory on the high school level.
He worked as a piano lab proctor at SUNY Fredonia in 2007-2009 and was the choral director at North Chautauqua Catholic School in 2009. He observed classes and assisted teachers in the William Floyd and Miller Place school districts in 2009.
District officials reviewed ten applications, pre-screened five candidates and then held three personal interviews before recommending Mr. Murphy for appointment.
