HHS Artists Participate in
Library Discussion

Three Huntington High School artists recently participated in an exhibit, reception and discussion of their art at the Huntington Public Library's Huntington Station branch.

Junior Jason Yanes and seniors Alison Bauer and Wilmarie Aviles discussed their art on during a Magna drawing reception on January 10. "These and other teens are enthusiastic members of the library's Anime Manga Drawing Workshop, which grew out of the teens' passion for the art form and a desire to share it with like-minded peers," said Beth Barning, a librarian who heads youth and parent services.

The drawing workshop group meets once a week at the library's Station branch under the guidance and mentorship of library staff member Mallory Coronado. "Students get their inspiration from books, films and video games," Ms. Barning said.

The artwork will remain on display at the Station branch through February. Several other students from Woodhull Intermediate School and J. Taylor Finley Middle School also participate in the drawing workshop program.

"With its main building in Huntington Village and its branch library in Huntington Station, the Huntington Public Library exists to serve the 34,000 residents of the Huntington Public Library District," according to the library's website. "It is a school district public library, a not-for-profit organization and a member of the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. To meet the diverse interests and needs of the community, the library offers a collection of fiction and non-fiction books in print, as well as downloadable books and videos. Subscription databases and internet resources are available for research. All electronic resources, including the online catalog and Ask-A-Librarian reference assistance are available 24 hours a day at www.thehuntingtonlibrary.org from any computer with access to the Internet."

Dozens of Huntington students can be found in the two library branches on any given day. "In its expanding role as a community center, the library provides educational and cultural programs and services for all ages and stages of life," according to its website. "Public computers and WiFi are available in both buildings. Services include job search help, literacy education, museum passes and homebound assistance. Programs reflect community interest in book discussions and author talks, arts and entertainment, crafts and cooking, computers and technology, health and fitness, jobs and careers, local history, parenting, and creative play. The library is on Facebook, Twitter and Flick'r."
