A recent Huntington High School boys' basketball game brought three generations of Blue Devil football players and coaches together. Pete Sansiviero made an appearance in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. He was joined by Steve Muller and James McCabe.
Sansiviero starred on the Huntington line in the 1950's. He went on to Ithaca College and then served as a football coach and district physical education teacher for more than three decades. Muller also played lineman for the Blue Devils before graduating in 1979 and going on to SUNY Cortland. He later returned to coach Huntington's line and has been the program's head coach for the past 20 years. McCabe played on the line in the 1990s, graduating in 1995 and going on to Marist College. Today he is the Blue Devils' varsity line coach.
Sansiviero coached Muller and Muller coached McCabe. The trio happily posed for a photo together.
A Wild Game
A wild game that saw the Huntington High School boys' basketball team rally from a nearly 20 point deficit to tie the game, played out before a crowd of about 225 in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium last Saturday afternoon.
Visiting Copiague jumped out to a 22-11 first quarter lead, which the Eagles expanded to 39-26 by halftime. Huntington fell even further behind early in the third quarter before the blue Devils staged a furious rally to through Copiague on the defensive. The final outcome was in doubt until the final seconds before the Eagles eked out a 63-58 victory.
Kiernan McGovern led all Blue Devil scorers with 19 points. Devon Nelson had 18 points and Patrick Reilly added 14. Connor Birchard scored three points and Scott Gulizio and Skylure Pannell each had two points. Huntington scored 10 points at the foul line.
Huntington outscored Copiague in the second half, 32-24, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles held on.
Ceide is Magnificient
Joellen Ceide scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Tara Byrnes had 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Huntington High School girls' basketball team past visiting Bellport, 50-48.
The score was close throughout the game, with neither team managing to get a lead of more than a few points. Huntington trailed after the first quarter 11-10, but was up at halftime, 25-24. The Blue Devils outscored the Clippers in the second half, 25-24.
With the score tied at 48-all, Raynisha Witherspoon drove down the entire length of the court and scored what proved to be the winning basket on a lay-up with about 30 seconds remaining in the game.
Mackenzie Maloney had six points for the Blue Devils and floor general Katie Nugent added five. Heather Forster and Witherspoon scored four points each. Katie Reilly had three points. Caitlin Knowles scored two points.
Nelson's 23 Points Leads HHS
The Huntington High School boys' basketball team held an early lead in its game at Bellport, but the Blue Devils were outscored in the second quarter, 15-7 and trailed at halftime, 24-17. The two teams battled to a 30-30 second half standoff as the Clippers held on for a 54-47 victory.
Devon Nelson led all Huntington scorers with 23 points. Kiernan McGovern added eight points and Patrick Reilly dumped in another six points on a pair of three-point baskets. Kevin Montefusco contributed four points and Connor Birchard and Alex Castillo scored three points each.
Scott Shatters Two Records
Tom Scott set a pair of Huntington High School swimming records and helped the Blue Devils topple host North Babylon, 91-82. Scott won the 400-freestyle in 4:25.40 and the 200 IM in 2:17.96. State champion Gunther Cassell captured the 100-breaststroke in 1:07.12 and the 50-freestyle in 29.12 seconds.
Allen among the Best
Huntington High School track star Y'Majesty Allen's 300m dash performance in the Molly Stanner Games in New York City has qualified the teenager for the MileSplit US First Team Elite. "The standard for such national recognition in the 300m dash is 35.97 seconds," said Ron Wilson, the Blue Devils' head coach. "Maj ran 35.77, which also ranked him No. 3 on Long Island.
Cassell Swims Strong
State champion Gunther Cassell won the 100-freestyle in 49.58 seconds and the 50-freestyle in 22.95 seconds, but the Huntington High School boys' swimming team fell to host Hauppauge, 103-77.
Close Loss after Big Rally
Down 23-19 at halftime, the Huntington High School boys' basketball team found itself in an event deeper hole by the end of the third quarter at Hauppauge last week. The Eagles went on a 19-8 third quarter run to build was seemed to be an insurmountable 42-27 lead. It actually got a little worse early in the final frame before the Blue Devils staged an incredible rally.
When all was said and done, Hauppauge had held on for a 53-50 victory, but Huntington left with its self-respect intact. No Blue Devil scored in double figures. Lee Reiver led the team with nine points. Devon Nelson and Patrick Reilly each scored eight points. Kenny Charles and Scott Gulizio both had six points. Kiernan McGovern added five points. Kevin Montefusco dropped in four points and Kenny McCarthy added three more. Connor Birchard scored one point from the foul line.
