BOE Considers Woodhull
Modular Options
Huntington School Board members and district executives discussed what to do with the modular classroom units located at Woodhull Intermediate School. The facility is currently being leased for three years. It is utilized for various classes related to the school's educational program.
Trustees debated whether to continue leasing the units or to purchase them or have them removed at the end of the lease. No final decision was reached. While the classrooms are being leased, the district put in place cement walkways leading to the facility, cesspools, electricity, water, etc.
The three options under consideration include:
• The district can renew the lease for the classrooms at a cost of $6,000 per month for a period of up to 60 months. The fee per month represents a lower cost than the current lease agreement and allows the district to explore its long-term options. Financing for this option would occur through the district's general fund as is the case with the current lease arrangement.
• Should the district decide to remove the modular classrooms it would incur a demolition and removal fee of $51,726. M-Space Holdings would dismantle and remove the units from Woodhull's grounds. Teachers and students would move back into the main building for all classes and activities.
• The district can purchase the modular units for $332,000, with ownership being assumed as of January 1, 2014. Should this option be selected, the district's capital reserve fund could be used if voters approve.
Trustees are expected to continue their discussion at future public meetings of the Huntington School Board.
